About Calla Chapnik
Calla Chapnik is a New York–based theater performer and multi-hyphenate creative originally from Toronto, Canada. Drawn to musicals with depth, edge, and complexity, she aims to comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable. Her work grows from deep love, radical curiosity, and the tension between analysis and instinct. Described as “introspectively unhinged” and having “badass vulnerability.”
Musical Theater
Favorite theater credits include Pippin (Player), The Sound of Music (Liesl), Marry Me a Little (Performer and Dance Captain), Fame (Iris), and the Canadian musical Going Under (Heather).
Concert Dance
As a contemporary dancer, Calla has performed at venues across New York City including Arts On Site, Martha Graham Studio Theater, Chain Theater, 28th St. Theater, Spark Festival, and D.I.G, working with choreographers in a range of styles. She is also a company member of “Prints Dance Company”
Collaboration & Creation
Passionate about developing original work, Calla has performed in and helped shape projects such as Under the Fig Tree and Manifest: Collective Creation. As a writer, she received the Ken Weston Theater Arts Prize for her script of Under the Fig Tree
Training
Calla is a graduate of St. Lawrence College, one of Canada’s premiere Musical Theatre colleges, with additional training at Broadway Dance Center and Steps on Broadway.
Beyond the Stage
Calla can often be found at Arts On Site performing, running lights or sound, or supporting fellow artists, reflecting her strong commitment to community. She believes that to tell stories truthfully, one must first listen deeply. With her eclectic spirit and cross-disciplinary lens, she engages with stories from every angle as performer, dancer, writer, technician, and collaborator.
